01. Matthew - NEW AGAIN is your latest album that everybody's been getting their teeth into. Its a  lot more pop sounding than previous albums. Or is that a wrong presumption? 
 

Julie Dexter  -
It's definetly the most mainstream type album that I've done in comparison to my previous works. I would describe it as old school soul with a new school twist on it and 'pop' to me means 'popular' so I'm definetly digging that


 02. Matthew - My first interview with the wonderful Julie Dexter was for my now shut down website  thanks to my parents changing to BT Broad Band www.feelthesoul.co.uk and since  then I have been out of the loop in terms of Julie's music. I know she's  released a few records since Khari Simmons bossa nova album. 


 . Julie Dexter - Moon Bossa was actually my last release before this album. I had released a single called Transitions produced by Zo! of Foreign Exchange but New  Again is my only full length release since then.

03. Matthew - Your
  genre of music has changed slightly. You've created a more pop sound or at
least  commercial appeal sound. Those are my observations at least, what are
yours of  your NEW AGAIN album?


 . Julie Dexter - I think you can still here all the elements that make up the "Julie Dexter" sound i.e the jazz, reggae, latin undertones but the backdrop is different because I worked with a different producer 'Steve Miggedy Maestro' out  of Chicago


  04. Matthew - Are you still happy living in Atlanta? Do you ever travel to record music or work in the UK on different songs? Would you ever collaborated with Soweto Kinch or someone like myself? (Don't have to answer the last question)!


 . Julie Dexter - I love living in Atlanta and travel back to England all the time working with different musicians and producers


 05. Matthew - Do you  think soul music has become too narrow in subjects, lyrically? I am relying on  artists like yourself to bring back meaningful songs. Major labels by eye witness have seemed to have decided that successful soul artists can only release albums around popular periods of the year, like summer or Christmas like  Erykah Badu. I know that's the seasons where people buy music most but a lot of  amazingly talented artists don't get that credibility. How do you feel about  that?


 . Julie Dexter - I think soul music is forever changing due to the climate and times we are living in. I think the love songs are still pretty much in the same vein but  the social commentary has changed. Love songs are more popular in the summer,  christmas time, Valentines etc, but an album like What's Going on was and still  is relevant all year around. I think me personally would like to hear more  social commentary like that of the Marvins , Donny Hathaway, Steve Wonder etc .  I think we can dig a little deeper


  06. Matthew - Are you popping over to do a Jazz Cafe' gig this summer? I'd look the chance to chat  with you? IF not...make sure you get Hasaan to send over jpgs and info
about any  gigs and I'll post them on Soul Discoveries like I recently did for IFE.

Julie Dexter - I am just now getting hip to Soul Discoveries but if you are interviewing me you already get a thumbs up (BIG SMILE) but seriously I'm assuming that all of your fans and readers are looking to discover something that is out there but has been hard to find so i would say keep on discovering on SOul Discoveries cos what they are giving you outside of that ain't it...


09. Matthew - Love 2  Love reminds me of Fly Me To The Moon by Nancy Wilson. If I recall she has been  a major influence in your music. Has Nancy Wilson or jazz music played apart of  the creation of NEW AGAIN?


  . Julie Dexter - I am a huge fan of Nancy Wilson. I think jazz is just a part of who I am so even if it's only very subtle the jazz is always in there whether it's in the phrasing or in the harmonies. 


  10. Matthew - Other than music what are your plans for this summer? Chillax? :)


 . Julie Dexter - Spending time with my family and new born son and of course touring the new album New Again

Chicago's Hottest Urban Music Video Show


Steve Miggedy Maestro

Steve was born a house baby.....literally!! Chicago Medical Center had a midwife program where the expecting mother could give birth at the home instead of the Chicago Medical Center. He was born 8:45 PM, Nov 17th 1967 to a pair of Belize natives living in Chicago. Both parents loved music in a city that did the same. Steve & his baby sister were sponges to all this music going on inside & outside the home.

Steve's interest in music began with vinyl, playing (and scratching) his father's LPs as well as his relatives that resided in The Bronx, Los Angeles, Phoenix & Belize. His parents got him a guitar at 7 & piano lessons at 10. Between catholic school & lessons, he still found time to further explore into the business of records, creating record covers for his many 45s.

Around Whitney Young High School, Miggedy befriended 3 other teen musicians to form Intimacii (misspelled for 'marketing purposes'). Deeply into Prince, House music also began to emerge as well as European pop & Miggedy would take his weekly lunch money & go buy records anywhere they would sell them.

After graduating High school & 6 years in the Army spinning many a barbeque, house party & nightclub, Steve met then-radio personality Cartier (pronounced kar-t-YAY) at the now-defunct Lasalle Club. A chance tape & a contest to be a mixer on WGCI emerged & a week later, Elroy Smith, then-PD of WGCI contacted Miggedy to request his services as a Mixshow DJ for Club 107.5 The rest is history.

While making masterpieces for WGCI, Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Doug Banks and Tom Joyner, Steve was also tapped by Gary Bernstein of SuperRadio Networks to do Old School & New School mixes for the syndicated radio program. As a result, Steve is heard in 30+ radio stations across the country including L.A., Orlando, FL, Raleigh, N.C. & Dallas, TX to name a few. Many record companies rewarded him with plaques from established juggernauts like Bad Boy, Rawkus, La Face, MCA & Def Jam.

Ten years later, he felt he needed a rest. So he moved to New York to focus on his production. After three years of returning home to Chicago to play, Steve packed it up & landed in Hammond, Indiana to do old school mixes for Soul 106.3 Due to downsizing, Miggedy was let go due to a low signal which led to lower ratings. Not slowing down, Steve began studying the art of Stepper's music through his sister & DJs Mellow Khris, Calvin, Raphael, Pierre & Freddie Mack (RIP). Through this observation, Steve began producing Stepper's cuts like "On To Something Good", Step Into The A.M." and "Brazillian Nights" that began a nationwide circulation on the Stepper's set. This has led to two more albums "Classics From The Future Vols. 1 & 2" and P-STRO "Genesis To Exodus".

Steve is currently in the studio working with Julie Dexter on her next Ketch A Vibe recording.
